"Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,"
(Hebrews 6:1)

We covered the first basic teaching in our last message. Repentance from dead works means to turn from your sins to face God and ask for forgiveness accepting his gift of eternal life, through Jesus Christ. Once this is done, we move on to understanding the second fundamental: Faith toward God. What is faith?

'Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1)

Let that sink in for a moment. Faith is the substance, the foundation or the essence, of things that are hoped for and the evidence of things unseen. I encourage you to read the whole of Hebrews Chapter Eleven, says much about faith.

"While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal." (2 Corinthians 4:18)

The things that are seen are only temporary. You may hold them in your hand, and heap all the treasures of the world but it will all melt away one day in a fervent heat (2nd Peter 3) However; the things which are not seen are the eternal things. It is these unseen things that we long for, and having faith we know that we can obtain them one day.
But it is that faith toward God and all those unseen things that we can have grace in jesus Christ, for it is by grace through faith.

For more on faith, I will redirect you to a three-part message on this very subject. They will strengthen you and increase your understanding concerning this second fundamental of Christianity: Faith toward God! Visit our Message Archives: Faith & Works
